My wife and I have finished our Christmas shopping for the year. This isn’t as impressive as it sounds since our policy is that we only buy for people who are in our immediate family and under 18. This limits our gift list to five people – all nieces or nephews.
Since we happened to be making one of our (fortunately) infrequent trips to a large city, my wife and I stopped into a coin dealer and bought five silver ’rounds’ for those young ones. If they go over well, we might make this our standard gift, branching out from the generic rounds to such items as pre-1964 silver dollars, foreign silver coins, or 1/10th ounce gold coins for very special occasions such as graduations.
I bet the kids will love it. There is something wonderful about holding real silver or gold. We stopped buying Xmas schlock a bit ago. What a relief. It was no longer joyful. We make donations to charity for our family gifts and anyone else gets gift cards to places we know they will like (we ask).
