The Sky is Falling!

They’re crawling out of the proverbial woodwork:  the desperate doomsaying Chicken Littles. The sky is falling, the sky is falling.

I have read countless blog posts in the last year that have preyed upon peoples’ worst fears. As a moderate and an Independent, I’ve seen it bleed out of the left and the right. But lately, the rhetoric seems especially vitriolic from the right. It feels especially designed to catapult the nation’s threat level to RED — this because the terrorists, say these bloggers, are but homegrown conspirators, sneaking into the Oval Office with their destructive socialist views, which can only wreak havoc on the god-fearing, good and patriotic American people with morals and capitalistic family values who may or may not live where you do. Ask Palin. She’s threaded this notion through every speech she’s made.

I’ve been stunned to see so many ill-informed people gather in the same cyber-spot in the sole pursuit of tearing apart the Democratic candidate, like agitated sharks in a sea of chum. The incitement begets more incitement until what’s left is just ritualistic bloodlust. It gives new meaning to the age-old question, “What are you jawing about?”

To those good and patriotic American people, I say, Come on. You’re scaring yourselves into a frenzy. You’re like the terrified townspeople stuck in a Stephen King church while some dark power picks off your Joe Breadwinners, one by one. Puh-leeze, get the facts and think for yourselves. You give away your personal power when you allow your party’s extremists to provide out-of-context sound bytes as reasoned arguments against that singular axis of evil, Barack “Hussein” Obama, that you are then free to vomit all over the masses.

I beg you, stop stirring the pot, generating fear and hate. Employ your critical thinking skills before you “speak” and make your poignant, zingy bloggy posts. And leave the scare tactics to Palin 2012 (*wink, wink*).
